The antenna system consisted of a 35’ metal telescoping mast which we mounted to the side of his house. The wire was then cut for 75M and we attached the RG-58 coax cable. The location of the antenna worked out great because Mel's’ room was right at the same spot as the mast. We ran the coax in through the siding and right into the shack. Mel was up and running right after we checked the SWR on the antenna. (Which by the way, was less than 1.2:1 over a wide area of the band. Well we recently talked with Mel and asked how the antenna was working, and he stated that he worked California the other night, and that his buddies are telling him that this is the best he has sounded in a long time. Well I guess the old saying still holds true, if you want the antenna to work great, put it up in unfavorable weather. Good luck Mel and 73’ Jim (KC8BGI) |

Back in April this year, four of the Tri-0county Amateur Radio club members got together at the new residence of our old time member Mel (W8KBK). The purpose of this gathering was to install a new 75m Dipole antenna for him. Mel recently moved out to the Spencerville area and was in need of an antenna to get back on 75 where he has many contacts and old buddies. The project was initiated by Jim (W8BHA) who also recruited Dale (N8PCN), Larry (KI8CP) and myself , Jim (KC8BGI). The weather was perfect for putting up an antenna. It was cold and windy. |

stations to local scouting groups for demonstrations and on/air QSO's with other hams and their scout guests. Nearly 100 local scouts converged on the home of club member WD8RJR during the weekend and conversed with other scouts Around the U.s. as well as in Great Britain and other countries, and watched as club members spoke with stations in Africa and elsewhere. Paul Baumgartee, WD8RJR graciously set up a special station outdoors for the event while other club members conducted demonstrations of Morse code and other facets of the hobby. Who knows, Jamboree On The Air may someday lead some new prospective enthusiasts to our fine hobby. Thanks to all that made it a success. |
